Rootstown Local Schools Announces Plan to Transition Middle School Students by the 2029–2030 School Year

Rootstown Local School District has established a timeline to transition students out of the current middle school building no later than the 2029–2030 school year as part of a long-term facilities strategy.

Under this plan, 6th grade students will attend the elementary school, while 7th and 8th grade students will be educated at the high school. This decision follows an analysis of available space within the district’s existing facilities and long-term operational considerations.

“This recommendation provides a clear timeline for our community while allowing the district time to plan responsibly for the future of our facilities,” said Board President Tom Siciliano. “Our priority is ensuring students have safe, functional learning spaces while making the most effective use of district resources.”

This timeline provides the district with ample time to continue evaluating funding strategies, facility needs, and long-term educational priorities. Potential future considerations include:

    • Ensuring physical education and performing arts programs have adequate space for learning and performing
    • Pursuing educational and/or community partnerships
    • Exploring additional funding opportunities

“This process is about making thoughtful decisions that support students for decades to come,” Siciliano added. “We appreciate the community’s engagement as we move forward.”

The Rootstown Education Association (REA), led by President Eric Daniels, supports the closure of the middle school in alignment with the timeline set by the Rootstown Board of Education.

“We will work in collaboration with the school board, administration, and community as we plan for this transition,” the REA stated. “We believe this decision is in the best interest of students and staff, as the building has reached the end of its effective and appropriate use as an educational facility.”

Emily Earls, President of OAPSE Local #569, also expressed support:

“The Rootstown classified staff stands in solidarity with administration regarding the building plan and the future of our district. We appreciate the opportunity to work together and remain committed to partnering with district leadership to support the success of both students and staff.”

The next Facilities Community Committee meeting is scheduled for April 29th at 6:00 p.m. in the Middle School Cafeteria. All community members are welcome to attend and participate in the future of Rootstown Local Schools.
